Tottenham Hotspur confirmed on Thursday that Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Heik has officially joined the club from Brighton. The club has not yet disclosed details regarding the length of the contract or other specifics.
Van Heck's contract with Brighton was originally set to expire in 2027. His transfer fee was approximately £52 million, with an additional 20% resale value.
The 26-year-old Van Heck started his career at Dutch Eredivisie powerhouse NAC Breda, before joining Brighton in September 2020 for €6.5 million. He was initially loaned out to Heerenveen and Blackburn Rovers to develop his skills, and only began to make his mark in Brighton's first team during the 2022/23 season.
To date, Van Heck has made 131 appearances for Brighton, scoring 4 goals and providing 6 assists.
Regarding the signing, Tottenham's sporting director John Langer explained: "Jan Paul is an outstanding defender who has performed brilliantly in the Premier League and internationally, and we have been watching him for many years."
"In addition to his excellent skills and strong defensive instincts, he also possesses the maturity, character and professionalism that we value when bringing in players."
"As we continue to improve our roster, it is crucial to bring in players who can contribute immediately and who fit our long-term plans."
“Jan Paul is a perfect fit for our needs, and we are excited about the contributions he can make to the team.”
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi also praised Van Heck, with whom he previously worked at Brighton for about two years (2022-2024): "Jan Paul is a player I knew very well when I worked with him at Brighton, and I'm happy to be working with him again."
"He is a strong, intelligent center-back who dares to control the ball and has a great presence on the field. These are indispensable qualities for the tactical system I envision."
"He is mature and composed off the field, possesses leadership qualities, and is eager to learn and improve every day."
“Jan Paulo has made great progress in the past few years, and I believe he can continue to grow at Tottenham Hotspur.”
Van Heik said: "I feel incredibly honored to be a member of Tottenham. Joining a top club is a dream come true."
“I have established a very strong relationship with the head coach and I look forward to working with him again. Miki van der Fein has also shared many wonderful stories about the club with me, so I can’t wait to start a new journey.”
“I’ve visited Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as an opposing player. Now, I look forward to stepping onto the pitch in front of the fans wearing a Tottenham shirt. That will be a special moment.”
It's worth mentioning that Van Heck is a member of the Dutch national team for this World Cup. He has already made his debut in the first round of the World Cup against Japan, and will next join the team to face Sweden and Tunisia, both in Group F.
