The Athletic exclusively reported on Tuesday that Nottingham Forest plans to sign Tottenham Hotspur youngster Lucas Bergvall as replacement if England international defensive midfielder Elliot Anderson leaves the club this summer.
According to reports, negotiations for Anderson's transfer to Manchester City have entered a very advanced stage. Bergvall feels that his position in the team is in jeopardy due to the club's recent frequent moves in the transfer market and is interested in leaving. He has publicly submitted a transfer request to Tottenham Hotspur.
However, journalists believes that whether Bergvall can join Forest still depends on when the club can reach an agreement with Manchester City on Anderson's transfer. If the transfer is completed just before or on the of the summer transfer window deadline day, Nottingham Forest's offer to Spurs may be rejected by then.
Secondly, since Spurs themselves is also launching a fierce pursuit in the transfer battle for Italiy international midfielder Sandro Tonali, and the player is also being pursued by multiple clubs at the same time, if Tonali fails to be signed, Spurs might refuse to let Bergvall leave the club without securing a replacement in advance.
Currently, Tonali has expressed his openness to moving to Spurs, but Newcastle United has not yet decided whether to agree to sell him this summer.
Another club that is interested in pursuing the player fiercely, Manchester United, can only keep a close eye on Tonali's future for the same reason.
It is worth mentioning that if Anderson is determined to leave the team this summer, then it will be a certainty that Nottingham Forest needs to strengthen its defensive midfielder position.
In the past two years, since signing Elliot Anderson from Newcastle United for £35 million in July 2024, Forest has not signed any other defensive midfielder on a permanent transfer.
During this period, Douglas Luiz and James Ward-Prowse were both on loan, but both of them were recalled early by their respective original clubs during the winter transfer window in January after only playing for a few months.
On the other hand, Nottingham Forest still need to carefully consider and evaluate Anderson's influence on the team.
The strong chemistry that Anderson has developed with Ibrahim Sangare and Morgan Gibbs-White is one of the reasons why Forest have managed to avoid relegation in recent years and even managed to reach the semi-finals of the Europa League.
If Bergvall fails to immediately replicate the chemistry between Anderson and the two mentioned above, the Premier League club could face serious problems.
