Former Lille right-back Meunier joined Sunderland on a free transfer, on a two-year contract.

Sunderland released a statement on Wednesday confirming the free transfer of former Lille right-back Thomas Meunier. The two sides have reached an agreement on a two-year contract, valid until June 30, 2028.

The official announcement also confirmed that Meunier will wear the number 12 jersey for Sunderland.

Regarding the signing, Sunderland's Director of Football, Florent Gisolfi, commented: "We are delighted to welcome Thomas to Sunderland Football Club – from the very first communication, we sensed his very positive attitude towards the club."

Throughout his career, Thomas has consistently maintained a high level of performance. He has played for several top European clubs and represented the Belgian national team on the international stage.

"He brings rich experience, outstanding leadership and high professionalism, while demonstrating exceptional strength on both offense and defense."

Meunier, 34, was born in Saint-Ode, Belgium. He made his professional debut for Verton in the Belgian Second Division on February 1, 2009. He subsequently played for Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and Trabzonspor, winning one Belgian First Division title, one Belgian Cup, three Ligue 1 titles, three Coupe de France titles, three Coupe de la Ligue titles, three Coupe de France titles, three Coupe de France titles, and one German Cup.

In July 2024, Meunier joined Lille on a free transfer. To date, he has made 81 appearances for Lille, scoring 4 goals and providing 4 assists.

It's worth mentioning that Meunier was a key member of the Belgian national team in this World Cup. He made a total of 3 appearances during the World Cup and contributed 2 assists.
