American reporter: The Wizards and Anthony Davis have reached a mutual decision to postpone contract renewal.

According to multiple reporters including Josh Robbins and Shams Charania, the Washington Wizards and Anthony Davis have reached an agreement to postpone his contract extension.

Davis, 33, became eligible for a contract extension on August 6, potentially signing a four-year, $275 million maximum contract with the Wizards. The reason for the temporary halt in extension negotiations is the lack of prior experience working together.

Since being traded to the Wizards in February, Davis has been sidelined with a left-hand injury. Both he and the Wizards hope to learn more about each other's situations before deciding whether to pursue a long-term partnership.

Charania further pointed out that the Wizards and Davis are expected to reassess their contract extension prospects after the first 20 regular season games. Davis hopes to use this opportunity to assess the Wizards' future plans and tactical style, while the Wizards' management will focus on his health and attendance.

On the other hand, postponing the contract extension also gives the Wizards a lot of room to maneuver. According to league rules, players cannot be traded within six months of signing an extension. If they rush into an extension now, the Wizards will completely lose their trading initiative in the first half of the new season.

As the number one overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, Anthony Davis is undoubtedly one of the league's top centers. He previously played for the New Orleans Hornets (now the Pelicans), the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Dallas Mavericks, accumulating 807 regular season games. He averaged 24.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 1.3 steals in 34.4 minutes per game, and garnered numerous individual accolades, including 10 All-Star selections, 4 All-NBA First Team selections, 3 All-Defensive First Team selections, and 3 blocks titles.

Davis also played 60 playoff games, averaging 26.1 points, 11.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.2 blocks, and 1.3 steals in 37.7 minutes per game. His most notable playoff achievement was winning the 2020 NBA championship with the Lakers.
