Werder Bremen snatched a dramatic late 2-2 draw away against Borussia Dortmund in their Matchday 5 fixture of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season at Signal Iduna Park on Friday.
In the first half, Sabitzer came close with a free-kick, while Beier saw a close-range effort brilliantly saved. The second half saw Svensson score by sliding the ball into the net and Schlotterbeck find the net with a header. At a crucial juncture, Werder staged a remarkable comeback within the span of four minutes: Reis’ long-range shot ricocheted off the post and into the net, followed by a header from Füllkrug. Ultimately, the match ended 2-2. Following this round of matches, Die Schwarzgelben temporarily remain at the top of the table with 13 points, while Werder sit in fourth place with 8 points.
First Half
In the 39th minute, Dortmund won a free-kick opportunity . Marcel Sabitzer stepped up and took the free-kick by directly firing a right-footed shot from outside the penalty area, but his shot drifted just wide of the top left corner of the post.
4 minutes later, Ethan Nwaneri played a straight pass from the right wing. Maximilian Beier quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps before volleying with his right foot from a very close distance in the box, but his shot was spectacularly saved by Karl Hein.
The first half ended with the scoreline still goalless as Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen headed into the break.
Second Half
Both teams switched sides as the match continued. In the 47th minute, Waldemar Anton passes horizontally from the right wing. Nico Schlotterbeck stopped the ball and adjusted his angles before taking a left-footed long shot from the left wing outside the penalty area, but his shot was held onto by Hein.
2 minutes later, Sabitzer played a straight pass from the attacking half. His pass was partially blocked and cleared by Amos Pieper but fell to Ethan Nwaneri, who fired a left-footed follow-up shot from just outside of the penalty area, but his shot was saved by Hein.
In the 54th minute, Hein launched a long ball from his own box. After successfully beating the offside trap, Niclas Füllkrug quiclkly followed up, go the ball and dribbled into the center of the box before taking a left-footed shot against the outrushing Gregor Kobel, but his shot was saved by the latter.
In the 80th minute, Fábio Silva passes horizontally from the right side of the box. Daniel Svensson quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass slid the ball into the high center of the net with his left foot from a very close distance in the box. Dortmund finally broke the deadlock first to take a 1–0 lead!
5 minutes later, Dortmund earned a deadly corner kick opportunity. Joey Veerman took the corner by crossing it into the box, where Schlotterbeck rose high and scored with a header in the box, extending Dortmund's lead to 2–0!
In the 88th minute, Werder launched a deadly counter-attack. Schlotterbeck made an error while clearing the ball in his own back half. After intercepting the ball, Oskar Wójcik passes horizontally from the right wing. Ludovit Reis quickly followed up, got the ball, cuts inside and took a few steps before taking a right -footed long shot from just outside of the penalty area, his shot struck the bottom left corner of the post and ricocheted into the bottom-right corner of the net.Werder Bremen pulled a goal back to make it 2–1!
In the second minute of injury time, Werder earned a deadly free-kick opportunity. Marco Grüll took the free-kick by lofting the ball into the of box from outside the penalty area. where Füllkrug rose high and scored with a header in the box, snatching a dramatic 2–2 draw for Werder Bremen against Borussia Dortmund! This marked the first time the Germany international striker had scored against his former club since leaving Die Schwarzgelben two years ago.
When the final whistle is blown, Werder Bremen secured a dramatic late 2–2 away draw against Borussia Dortmund.
