Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega officially announced his candidacy for the FIFA presidency..

The Athletic exclusively reported on Friday that former Tottenham Hotspur and Swiss international defender Ramon Vega has announced his candidacy for the FIFA presidency, becoming the first person to publicly challenge incumbent Gianni Infantino, who is seeking re-election.

According to the report, Vega feels a duty to set things right and uphold the dignity of the sport in order to repair the image of FIFA, and global football as a whole, which he believes has been severely damaged under Infantino’s leadership.

In an 11-page manifesto released to the media, Vega said: "I have decided to step forward and run because my life experiences have prepared me to serve this sport."

"I believe I have a duty and a social responsibility to protect and defend football, its integrity, its people, and its future."

"Confidence and trust across the entire football family have been severely damaged. We must rebuild both, restore FIFA's credibility, and reunite the global football community."

"Football should always come first. Yet, for too long, division has plagued our football family."

"The current leadership has demoralized the sport. Poor governance has damaged FIFA's credibility and eroded trust within the global football community. We must stop this conflict from escalating further."

"Self-serving infighting within football's leadership must never be allowed to harm the people who matter most—the players, coaches, referees, and fans around the world. They bear no responsibility for these conflicts and deserve better."

"Football is in the 'emergency room,' barely kept alive by life-support systems. We cannot wait any longer. FIFA needs a new direction and fundamental reform."

"We must unite the football family, rebuild trust, achieve stability, and modernize FIFA's governance. This requires decisive change, not just superficial fixes."

It is worth mentioning that this marks the third time Vega has announced his intention to run for the FIFA presidency.

In 2015, following the resignation of former president Sepp Blatter, Vega announced he was considering a bid for the FIFA presidency to challenge Infantino.

He decided to run again in 2022, but the campaign failed to materialize due to a lack of sufficient support from within the industry.

As with the current situation, to be formally recognized as a serious contender, Vega must secure the backing of officials from at least five of FIFA's 211 member associations.

Infantino has faced immense pressure since abandoning the "FIFA Forward Enterprise" (FFE) plan—an initiative intended to sell minority stakes in FIFA's commercial and event operations (including the men's and women's World Cups) to private investors—amidst a storm of criticism.

Last month, FIFA confirmed that the 56-year-old Infantino remains determined to seek re-election for a third term, despite UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC making no secret of their desire for him to step down.
