German media outlet SID exclusively reported on Thursday that Borussia Dortmund is set to finalize a contract extension with its head coach Niko Kovač.
According to the report, this news was personally confirmed by Dortmund CEO Carsten Cramer during an interview with the media outlet.
Cramer said that everyone at the club holds Kovač's abilities in high regard. However, as the team is currently only just returning from the international break, there are still some details to be ironed out. Nevertheless, an agreement between Kovač and the club is expected to be reached soon.
Cramer said: "Niko Kovač is held in very high esteem. It is obvious that extending his contract is only a matter of time."
"Since not everyone was at the club during the international break, there are still some discussions to be held. For this reason, the procedural aspects have not yet been finalized."
The report added that, while unconfirmed, Kovač is expected to sign a new three-year contract which runs until the summer of 2029.
Kovač's current contract was originally set to expire at the end of this season. A successful renewal would put an end to rumors suggesting he might move to coach in the Premier League next season.
About Niko Kovač
Kovač, 54, was born on October 15, 1971, in Berlin, Germany. He is 1.78 meters tall and primarily played as a defensive midfielder during his career but was also capable of playing as a left or right midfielder. He holds dual German and Croatian citizenship. His younger brother, Robert, played as a center-back. Voth brothers were legendary Croatian internationals and played together for Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich.
Kovač has previously served as head coach for the Croatian national team, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich, and AS Monaco, winning multiple trophies along the way.
Kovač was appointed head coach of Wolfsburg in May 2022 but was sacked in mid-March 2024 due to poor results.
In January 2025, Kovač succeeded former Turkish star Nuri Şahin as the new Borussia Dortmund head coach.
Since taking charge of BVB, Kovač has managed the Bundesliga giants in 80 matches across all competitions, recording 49 wins, 14 draws, and 17 losses, with a win percentage of 61.25%, and guided the team to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
