Atlético Madrid announced on its official website on Friday that Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has completed the acquisition process and officially joined the club's group of minority shareholders.
According to the club's official statement, the partnership is rooted in shared values: ambition, a pursuit of excellence, and the conviction that every achievement must be earned through hard work.
However, due to commercial confidentiality, neither Atlético Madrid nor Gilgeous-Alexander, nor any major media outlets in the US or Europe, have disclosed the purchase price.
Speaking to the club's official website after finalizing the deal, Gilgeous-Alexander said: "I am thrilled to officially join the ownership group of Atlético Madrid. This club has long stood at the pinnacle of European football, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of its future."
Gilgeous-Alexander becomes the fourth NBA star to invest in a football club.
He is also the first player from the league to invest in a La Liga club.
In 2011, four-time MVP and Philadelphia 76ers superstar LeBron James, acquired a minority stake in Liverpool FC alongside Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and RedBird Capital, becoming the first NBA player to invest in a football club.
Since then, James has collaborated with Liverpool on co-branded merchandise for over a decade.
Subsequently, nine-time All-Star shooting guard Russell Westbrook became a minority shareholder of Leeds United in 2024.
Miami Heat superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, also became a minority shareholder in Nashville SC and Chelsea FC Women in March 2023 and February 2026, respectively.
Two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant became a shareholder of reigning champions of both Ligue 1 and the Champions League Paris Saint-Germain in July 2025.
