Russell Martin: I'm satisfied with the team's attitude; the players maintained a lot of running on the field.

Leicester City manager Russell Martin said the team showed a lot of commendable qualities in their 1-0 victory over Northampton in the first round of the English League Cup, but also exposed some issues that need to be addressed in future matches.  

Leicester City recently hosted Northampton Town at the King Power Stadium. In the 16th minute, center-back Caleb Okoley capitalized on a set-piece opportunity to score the only goal of the match, securing a 1-0 victory and advancing to the second round of the League Cup. This win also marked Russell Martin's first official victory as manager of Leicester City.  

After the match, Russell Martin said he was satisfied with the team's performance, including winning and keeping a clean sheet while maintaining strong control of the game. He said, "I'm very happy to have won, kept a clean sheet, and controlled the tempo of the game well. Of course, we still need to create more threatening chances, that's for sure."  

"However, I really liked the overall atmosphere in the stadium today. The fans gave the team tremendous support and performed exceptionally well. I am also very satisfied with the attitude the players showed today. They kept running actively throughout the game and were highly engaged."  

Speaking about his first official match in charge of Leicester City, Russell Martin said that considering the many changes the team had undergone in the past six weeks, the players were already satisfied with their performance under such circumstances.  

He said, "This was only our first official match, and the team has undergone a lot of adjustments over the past six weeks. The players need to receive, understand, and adapt to a lot of new information. I think everyone played quite well today. Of course, there are still many areas where we need to continue to learn and improve."  

"However, I am very satisfied with the players' high level of commitment and energy in pressing back after losing possession, applying constant pressure, and quickly reorganizing their defense when they couldn't regain possession immediately. We were facing a very well-organized Northampton team today. I have always highly regarded their manager, Chris Hogg, who is an excellent coach, so we knew before the game that it would be a challenging match, and such contests are never easy."  

“No matter where the game is played or who the opponent is, we must remain proactive and show enough attacking aggression in the game. I think the team implemented this very well today. It was because we were able to keep applying pressure and successfully regain possession many times that we were able to control the game for a considerable period of time.”  

"Overall, we played very solidly on the defensive end and also showed enough pressure. We also clearly dominated possession. However, we still need to further improve our ability to create scoring opportunities, and I believe the team will find a solution. As a coach, I am very much looking forward to what's to come."  

Russell Martin believes the players showed a very high level of commitment during the match, maintaining their energetic running and high spirits despite the hot weather. He said, "I think the players were running their hearts out today and giving their all for the team. It has to be said, the weather was really hot today."  

“Even when the team had possession, the players still put in a lot of effort, hoping to further control the pace of the game. In the first half, we were sometimes too eager to succeed, because everyone wanted to get the game into their own rhythm as soon as possible. In the second half, the team handled things more steadily, but while maintaining patience, we were still able to push forward quickly, thus creating a lot of attacking space. Going forward, we need to improve the efficiency of our use of these opportunities.”  

“I’m very pleased that we were able to push our position into the opponent’s half for most of the second half. In contrast, we spent a lot of time in midfield in the first half, and were even forced to retreat to our own half at times. So there are still many aspects of the team that need improvement, but at the same time, today’s performance has given us a lot of positive signs.”  

“I am proud of the players’ performance today. Moving forward, we cannot stop here, but must continue to improve the team, accumulate experience, and build upon that foundation.”
