Liverpool announced on its official website on Saturday that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin have agreed to acquire a stake in the club.
According to Liverpool’s official statement, Saverin and Bezos will acquire a small stake in the club through the establishment of a jointly held investment company, K5 Sports.
In addition, Indian steel magnate Amit Bhatia will also become a minority shareholder in Liverpool alongside K5 Sports through his 1892 Holdings.
Under the agreement, Liverpool’s largest shareholder, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), will sell a 20% stake in the club, valued at £1.65 billion, to this joint consortium comprising Bezos, Savarin, and Bhatia.
Under the new board structure, Batia will become Liverpool’s new vice chairman, and Elaine, the wife of Eduardo Saverin, will join the Reds' board on her husband’s behalf.
In addition, Bezos will appoint his business partner Bryan Baum to join the Liverpool board on his behalf.
Following the completion of the acquisition, Bhatia said via Liverpool’s official website: “We are extremely proud to invest in Liverpool and to partner with FSG. We have the deepest respect and admiration for FSG as club owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield.”
“It is a tremendous honor to be welcomed as a partner by such a premier club. We are making this investment because we have unwavering confidence in Liverpool and its management, and we look forward to supporting the club’s continued success for many years to come.”
Liverpool CEO Mike Gordon also said: “Liverpool has always maintained a vision that extends beyond a single season and makes decisions with the club’s long-term interests in mind. This philosophy continues to attract the attention of highly respected investors and business leaders worldwide.”
“As we evaluated this opportunity, it became clear that Amit and his consortium share our long-term vision and equally value what makes Liverpool unique. Their experience and vision will complement our existing strong foundation, and we look forward to working with them.”
It is worth mentioning that Bezos and Saverin have become the third American figures to join Liverpool’s board of directors.
Several years ago, NBA star LeBron James also became a non-executive director of both FSG and Liverpool.
The Philadelphia 76ers’ newest signing has also collaborated with the Premier League powerhouse over the years to launch several co-branded fashion and sneaker collections.
