Sunderland Football Club officially announced today that it has reached a contract extension agreement with its young full-back Jenson Jones.
This homegrown star, who emerged from the club's youth academy, signed a new two-year contract on the banks of the River Welsh, and will continue to wear the red and white jersey for Sunderland in the future.
Last season, Jones displayed a maturity and potential far beyond his years. He not only made 14 league appearances for Sunderland's U21 youth team, securing a starting position in the youth team, but also became a regular in the club's first team thanks to his amazing performances in daily training, and was selected for the Premier League matchday squad multiple times.
In an interview with the club's official website, Jones could not hide his excitement and pride, saying, "It's a great feeling and a huge opportunity for me."
“Growing up in Sunderland and having played for the club for so long, making it into the first team has always been my ultimate goal, so being so close to it makes you even more eager to achieve it.”
Speaking about what he gained from his experience with the first team, Jones added: "All the players in the first team took good care of me and helped me grow and improve, which made me even more eager to stay there."
"I don't think I could have achieved what I have today if I hadn't integrated into the first team environment. I hope I can demonstrate my abilities in the upcoming preseason games and do my best to stay with the first team."
