Wahlgrande and Yamaz signed a $252 million contract extension with the Spurs, taking a pay cut to help the team win future championships.

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wimbledonama has agreed to a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie extension.

According to sources, the agreement includes a player option for a fifth season. Notably, after exploring various frameworks with the team, Wernbanyama opted to forgo the 30% supermax trigger clause, which could have reached $303 million, and instead chose to accept a 25% regular max contract.

This move is expected to save the Spurs approximately $50 million in salary cap space over the next five years. Wimbledon publicly stated on social media: "Spurs family, I'm staying here. At all costs."

It is reported that the Spurs' management and coaching staff previously traveled to Paris to meet with Wernban Yama and his family. Although the team offered various options, including a full supermax contract, Wernban Yama ultimately chose to make financial sacrifices to increase the team's flexibility in building a long-term championship-contending roster around him.

In the recently concluded 2025-26 season, 22-year-old Viktor Axelsen delivered a dominant performance. He not only won the Defensive Player of the Year and the blocks title, but was also selected as an All-Star Game starter and named to the All-NBA First Team.

Last season, Wanbanyama averaged a career-high 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.08 blocks, and 1.03 steals, becoming the seventh player in league history to achieve 25+10+3 stats in a single season.

Despite the Spurs' 1-4 loss to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, this playoff run provided valuable experience for the young star player.
