Chelsea are reportedly preparing a major move in the transfer market. They are understood to be in talks with Brighton to sign 35-year-old England striker Danny Welbeck.
Welbeck scored 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances last season and has only one year left on his contract. Brighton are open to letting him go for the right offer.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are also in talks with Brentford, interested in signing 36-year-old former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson. Henderson made 34 appearances last season and was selected for England's World Cup squad. Brentford are reportedly willing to let him leave on a free transfer with one year remaining on his contract.
These moves indicate that Chelsea's transfer strategy is changing under manager Xabi Alonso, with a focus on bringing in experienced and established players.
If veterans join, the current attacking lineup at Stamford Bridge will face a reshuffle. Liam Delap, who joined for £30 million, had a poor debut season and was originally expected to stay and prove himself, but his future is now in doubt; meanwhile, Nicolas Jackson, who was on loan at Bayern Munich last season, has attracted interest from Aston Villa.
If Welbeck's signing goes smoothly, he will become the latest player in recent years, following Sanchez, Caicedo, and João Pedro, to transfer from Brighton to Chelsea. Whether Chelsea can capitalize on the veteran's experience to create a breakout season remains to be seen.
