Lothar Matthäus believes Kimmich can perform better in the mid lane.

German legend Lothar Matthäus recently stated that German captain Joshua Kimmich is better able to utilize his abilities when playing in the center of the field.

In the 2025/26 Bundesliga season, Kimmich made 29 appearances for Bayern Munich, contributing two goals and eight assists, and helped Kompany's team win the Bundesliga title and the German Cup.

Kimmich joined the German national team squad for the 2026 World Cup. However, in a crucial match of the Round of 32, Germany equalized in regular time thanks to a goal from Havertz, but then lost 3-4 to Panama in a hard-fought penalty shootout, failing to advance to the Round of 16.

Following Nagelsmann's departure as head coach, legendary figure Klopp was appointed as the new head coach of the "German machine" earlier.

German legend Lothar Matthäus said, "Those disappointing results in major tournaments were the biggest blow to him because he is someone who is extremely eager for success and willing to give everything for it."

Furthermore, Lothar Matthäus pointed out, "The thing I regret most during the World Cup was that Kimmich wasn't playing in the center. He's been Bayern Munich's quarterback for many years. He's equally effective when he plays that position for the national team."

"Of course, he didn't perform at his best in the previous World Cups. But I think that was more due to the positional arrangement than to Kimmich's individual performance."
