Former Real Madrid and Real Betis Spain international attacking midfielder Sergio Canales officially returns to Racing Santander as a free agent..

Racing Santander announced on its official website on Friday that former Real Madrid and Real Betis Spain international attacking midfielder Sergio Canales has returned to the club as a free agent.

According to the newly promoted La Liga side's official statement, Canales has signed on a short-term two-year deal with the club which will only run until the summer of 2028.

About Sergio Canales

The 35-year-old Canales was born on February 16, 1991, in Santander, Cantabria, Spain. He is 1.76 meters tall and primarily plays as an attacking midfielder but can also play as a right winger.

Canales joined Racing Santander's youth academy at the age of 10 and completed his first-team debut by coming on as a substitute in a UEFA Cup match in September 2008.

During his two-year spell at Racing Santander, Canales' outstanding performances attracted the attention of several top Spanish clubs.

In February 2010, Canales joined Real Madrid for €4.5 million.

During his time with Los Blancos, despite limited playing time, he won the Copa del Rey.

The following August, Canales joined Valencia on-loan, his €7.5 million buy-out clause was later triggered by Los che.

In late January 2014, Canales moved to Real Sociedad for €3.5 million.

After his contract expired in the summer of 2018, Canales joined Real Betis as a free agent.

During his five-year spell with Heliopolitanos, Canales became a Spain international player and won the Copa del Rey once.

In July 2023, Canales joined Monterrey for €11 million.

During his three-year spell with Monterrey, Canales made 118 appearances for the Liga MX powerhouse in all competitions, scoring 46 goals and providing 22 assists, and helped the team reach the Liga MX Apertura finals once.
