Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Reina has officially joined Strasbourg on a five-year contract.

Strasbourg announced on Tuesday that American midfielder Giovanni Reyna has joined from Borussia Mönchengladbach. The two sides signed a five-year contract, valid until June 30, 2031.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Reina's transfer fee is €3 million plus €1 million in add-ons. Furthermore, Borussia Mönchengladbach will retain a 10% cut of the player's transfer fee on any subsequent transfer.

The 23-year-old Reyna came through the New York City FC youth academy and officially joined Borussia Dortmund's U17 team at the age of 16. On January 18, 2020, he made his professional debut in the Bundesliga match against Augsburg, wearing the yellow and black jersey.

During his six-year stint at Dortmund, Reina made 147 appearances across all competitions, scoring 19 goals and providing 18 assists, winning a German Cup title with the team. He also spent half a season on loan at Nottingham Forest, contributing one assist in 10 appearances across all competitions.

In August 2025, Reina transferred to Borussia Mönchengladbach for €4 million. Due to injuries, he has only made 10 appearances for Mönchengladbach so far, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

After the transfer was completed, Borussia Mönchengladbach's sporting director, Ruben Schröder, said: "Gio is an excellent player. Unfortunately, he only showed some of his potential during his year at Mönchengladbach; and due to constant injuries, he was never able to consistently perform at his best on the pitch."

“We have previously made it clear that we hope and must make adjustments and streamlining to the team roster. Therefore, everyone agrees that parting ways this summer is the right choice for both sides. We wish him all the best and great success in his journey in France.”
