Forlán officially took over as head coach of the Uruguayan national team, while also serving as the U20 coach.

The Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) announced on Thursday the official appointment of 47-year-old Uruguayan football legend Diego Forlán as the national team coach. Forlán will take over as interim coach and lead the team until March 2027.

The official announcement also confirmed that Forlán will also serve as the head coach of Uruguay's U20 team. His primary task upon taking charge of the U20 team is to lead the team in preparations for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, co-hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.

Forlán had a brilliant playing career, winning the Premier League title, FA Cup, Community Shield, Intertoto Cup, Europa League, and UEFA Super Cup with Manchester United, Villarreal, and Atlético Madrid. He also led Uruguay's "Golden Generation" to the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and won the 2011 Copa America.

In August 2019, Forlán announced the end of his 22-year playing career. He then transitioned into coaching, and coached Peñarol and San Carlos Athenians in his home country.

However, Forlán has been unemployed since stepping down as Athens manager in September 2021. His appointment as Uruguay manager, replacing Marcelo Bielsa, marks his return to coaching after nearly five years of inactivity.

According to the schedule, Forlán will make his debut as Uruguay's coach during the international break in September. All indications suggest that Uruguay's friendly opponents will be Japan on the 24th and South Korea on the 28th.
