Nottingham Forest owner Marinakis sues Crystal Palace for defamation

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has filed a defamation lawsuit against Crystal Palace and related individuals in the High Court after being angered by the display of highly insulting banners by opposing fans.

The dispute stemmed from a match between the two teams at Selhurst Park nearly a year ago. At that time, Crystal Palace fans displayed a huge banner in the stands depicting Marinakis holding a gun to the head of Crystal Palace midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, along with sensitive terms such as extortion, match-fixing, drug trafficking, and corruption.

The Greek shipping magnate has previously vehemently denied the allegations. In February, the English Football Association fined Crystal Palace £50,000 for failing to effectively manage fan misconduct.

In fact, the two clubs have a long history of animosity. Nottingham Forest had previously filed a complaint with UEFA alleging that Crystal Palace violated the rules regarding multiple club ownership, which directly resulted in Crystal Palace being replaced by Nottingham Forest in the European competition standings.

However, the dramatic turn of events between the two teams did not stop there. Oliver Glasner, the manager who led Crystal Palace to the UEFA title, was successfully persuaded by Marinakis after his contract expired and took over as manager of Nottingham Forest this summer.

The feud between the two teams has escalated further as legal proceedings continue. According to the schedule, they will meet again in the Premier League on October 10th, a highly anticipated and heated match that is sure to be the focus of attention.
