Knicks suspend contract extension negotiations? Towns: I'm very disappointed.

Karl-Anthony Towns said on Sunday that he was disappointed by the New York Knicks' decision to postpone contract extension negotiations.

On Friday, local time, the Knicks released a statement through ESPN's Shams Charania. In the statement, a team spokesperson confirmed that they had put all contract renewal negotiations on hold: "As a team, we are focused on preparing for the upcoming season and striving to make our fans proud again. Therefore, we will not be engaging in any contract negotiations later in the season and will continue to focus on preparing for the new season."

With the Knicks suspending contract extension negotiations, several key players, including Karl-Anthony Towns, will enter the new season with an uncertain future. Besides Towns, Josh Hart, Miles McBride, and Tyler Klek are all currently eligible for contract extensions, and Jalen Brunson will also be eligible for an extension next year.

Karl-Anthony Towns opened up about the Knicks' decision after the team's practice on Sunday. He told several reporters, including James Edwards III, "I just found out myself. To be frank, basketball is a business. However, we also have things to deal with on the court."

The Knicks reportedly offered Towns a four-year, $200 million contract extension, approximately $77 million short of his maximum salary offer. Even if Towns is willing to continue negotiating a contract that balances his value with the team's salary cap space, the two sides remain significantly at odds over the amount. Furthermore, Knicks owner James Dolan's desire to keep the total salary below the second-highest salary threshold has prevented any significant progress in the negotiations.

Despite the twists and turns in contract renewal negotiations, Towns' championship mentality remains unchanged: "Since we won the championship, my only idea, the only thing on my mind, is how to win again. My focus when preparing for the new season is no different from when I was facing the opening game: How can we keep the championship trophy in New York longer, and not just for one summer?"

As the starting center for the Knicks' NBA championship run last season, the 30-year-old Karl-Anthony Towns played 19 playoff games, averaging 30.4 minutes, 18.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.9 blocks, and 0.8 steals per game. He also played 75 regular season games for the Knicks, averaging 20.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in 31.0 minutes per game, and was selected to the All-Star team for the sixth time in his career.
