Liverpool faced various challenges and setbacks in the 2025/26 Premier League season, ultimately finishing fifth and securing a Champions League spot. However, the departures of two Liverpool legends, Salah and Robertson, added a touch of melancholy to the season's conclusion.
In the final round of the league, Liverpool took the lead with a goal from Jones assisted by Salah, but were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford just minutes later when Kevin Shadd scored.
Liverpool midfielder Jones said in an interview: "This season has been very up and down. We've won some important games and lost some of them. But the most important thing now is that we've qualified for the Champions League. Robertson and Salah are incredible people. They've helped me since I was a kid and they've helped the whole team. So it's definitely sad to see them leave."
“But I’m also very happy that we finally achieved our goal. Although it was just a draw in the end, we still qualified for the Champions League. So it was a touching day, and it was very important for us, the club and the fans.”
When asked about how Robertson and Salah helped him, 25-year-old Jones said, “Salah helped me in a different way. He’s always been a role model and very professional. He’s always the first one to arrive at the gym and the last one to leave. There was a time when I was struggling with injuries, and Salah even allowed me to use his private physiotherapist. Because of these things, I have a lot more respect for him.”
"As for Robertson, he has been helping me since I came from the youth academy to the first team. He always told me that I have talent and ability, but I have to work harder, so he has always been very strict with me. There were times when I even felt that he was targeting me, but as I got older and more mature, I realized that it was all out of love. He just wanted me to be better. The two of them have helped me a lot in many ways."
I am still saddened by Jota's departure.
Jones shared, “From the day I joined the team, the team’s standards were already set, and we had to follow those rules and agree with what these older guys were sticking to. We’ll go through highs and lows together, and these brothers will always be there for you in the most difficult times. They’ll also be there in the best times. So the most important thing now is for us to carry on that spirit.”
“This was the most difficult time. We lost a brother, Jota, who was a very important part of us. He helped everyone every day, both as an individual and as a player, he was incredible. I can still feel that emotion, and I get very emotional every time I talk about it. He was always a very important presence in the team, and then we lost him.”
Jones continued, "This season has been full of ups and downs, but the greatest thing about this club is that everyone has always been united, and our families and fans have always been there to support us. Qualifying for the Champions League is very important, and next season will be exciting again. Our new signings have now played enough games, and they will truly feel like they are part of the team, and we will see their best."
“I’m really looking forward to it, and next season will definitely be great. We can leave everything behind and enjoy football and the freedom to play again.”
