Fabian Schär has renewed his contract with Newcastle United, extending it until 2027.

Newcastle United have announced a contract extension with defender Fabian Schär, extending his stay until the end of the 2026/27 season. His original contract expired this summer, meaning he will remain at St. James' Park for his ninth season. The Swiss international has made 86 appearances for his national team, and the club is currently in pre-season preparations.

Since joining Newcastle United from Deportivo La Coruña in July 2018, Fabian Schär has become the second longest-serving player in the squad. He has made 251 appearances for the club to date, contributing significantly to the club's progress in recent years. He not only helped the team reach the Champions League twice but also won the League Cup with them last season.

Fabian Schär, 34, has consistently been a solid defender while also posing a threat in attack, having scored 22 goals for Newcastle United so far. Speaking about his contract extension, he said, "I'm very happy to stay here. We've achieved a lot over the past eight years, but I believe there's much more to look forward to in the future."

“Newcastle United is like home to me, and I’m very proud of that. I have a deep affection for the city and the club, so I’m very happy to be able to stay for another year. Last season had to end early due to injuries, which wasn’t ideal. But now I’m fully recovering and hope to return to the pitch next season and fight for the team’s goals.”

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe approved of Fabian Schär's contract extension, saying: "Fabian Schär has been a very consistent and excellent player since I took over the team, so I am very pleased to see him continue to stay. He is crucial to the team, not only in terms of his ability on the pitch, but also in terms of his leadership and extensive experience."

“Fabian Schär was in good form before his injury. His absence at the end of last season affected the team in several ways, including backcourt organization, defensive stability, and match experience. We have been monitoring his recovery progress and look forward to his return to the field next season.”

Sporting Director Ross Wilson also endorsed the contract extension, saying, "I am delighted that Fabian Schär has chosen to remain at the club and continue his Newcastle United career for the next year. He has always been highly respected and loved within the club. He has made positive contributions to the team over the past eight years. We believe he will continue to play an important role both on and off the pitch."

“Despite the complexities of the contract extension process, the club and all parties involved wanted to clarify Fabian Schär’s future as soon as possible. Moving forward with negotiations quickly after the season ended allowed us to finalize the extension at the start of the summer transfer window. We also look forward to him rejoining the team during preseason.”
