Premier League club Manchester United have reached an agreement with Serie A club Atalanta to sign 26-year-old Brazilian midfielder Ederson for an initial transfer fee of €40.5 million (approximately £35 million).
This deal, including add-ons, could cost up to €45 million, and would be Michael Carrick's first signing since becoming Manchester United's permanent manager.
With veteran Casemiro's contract expiring and his departure, Carrick and sporting director Jason Wilcox have identified Ederson as their replacement. Manchester United have reached an agreement with the player on personal terms, with a contract running until June 2030, including a one-year extension option.
Although the summer transfer window opens on June 15, the deal is expected to officially begin early next month as medical examinations have not yet been conducted.
As a defensive midfielder, Ederson possesses excellent running energy, game reading ability, and defensive interception skills. His arrival may hasten the departure of another defensive midfielder, Ugarte, who has had limited opportunities since joining in 2024 for £51 million and may be loaned out or sold this summer.
Ederson previously played for Salernitana and several other Brazilian clubs, and made his Brazilian national team debut in 2024.
It is understood that Carrick plans to sign two new midfielders this summer. Real Madrid's Aurelien Choameni, Brighton's Carlos Balepa Noum Quama, and Crystal Palace's Adam Walton are all on Manchester United's shortlist for future signings.
