Southend United Football Club has officially announced that Kieran Dier has been appointed as the team's new head coach, signing a two-year contract with an option to extend for a third year. Prior to this, he worked at his youth academy club Ipswich Town, coaching at multiple levels including U18, U23, and the first team, possessing extensive experience in youth training and player development.
After a comprehensive selection process that included candidates from both within the UK and overseas, the club ultimately decided to appoint Kieran Dyer as its new head coach. His selection was based on his coaching experience, leadership skills, tactical understanding, emphasis on player development, and strong alignment with the club's long-term development plans.
The club believes that his experience as a player and coach at various levels of English football makes him the ideal candidate to lead the team into a new phase of development.
Kieran Dyer said upon taking office: “I am very proud and honored. Southend United is one of the biggest clubs in the National League and should belong to the English Football League system. I am very much looking forward to starting my job and hope to lead the club back to where it belongs – the English Football League.”
“Over the years, I have been absorbing knowledge like a sponge, learning and observing the working methods of different top coaches. There are many ways to play football, and integrating these concepts into one's own coaching approach is very important for long-term development. Here we are not afraid of any opponent, we will try to control possession of the ball and play in a high-intensity manner, which is also one of my basic principles. If we can do these things, we have a great chance of success.”
"To the fans, I will do everything I can to help the team succeed. I hope you enjoy this journey and that you like the football we present."
Club football director Oliver Gage also commented on the appointment, saying: "I am delighted to welcome Kieran Dyer to Southend United and look forward to working with him to continue to drive the club's development. Throughout the selection process, his most outstanding quality was his clear thinking. He has a very clear understanding of the team's playing style, player development, and the construction of a high-level training environment."
"He possesses top-level playing experience and a solid coaching background, while consistently maintaining a learning and improvement attitude. He identifies with the club's collaborative culture and shares the club's ambition to drive Southend United forward. He understands everything that is needed for promotion from the National League, appreciates the significance of the club and its fans, and wants to continuously raise the bar."
