Schalke 04 completes contract extension with goalkeeper Loris Karius..

Schalke 04 announced on their official website on Tuesday that they have extended the contract of their German goalkeeper, Loris Karius.

According to Schalke 04's official statement, Karius signed a new short-term two-year deal with the club which will only run until the summer of 2028, with an option to extend for another year.

After completing his contract extension, Karius, who was interviewed by the Schalke 04 official website again, said: "Last season proved how unity, energy, and focus can help us achieve as a team. That's why I decided to extend my contract. I'm very much looking forward to the new season and our return to the Bundesliga."

About Loris Karius

The 32-year-old Karius was born on June 22, 1993, in Biberach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He is 1.89 meters tall and plays as a goalkeeper. Handsome in appearance, he is also an amateur model.

Karius played for Stuttgart's youth academy during his youth years. Courtesy of his outstanding performances with the Germany U16s national team, he joined Manchester City's youth academy in July 2009.

In August 2011, Karius was loaned-out to Mainz, playing for their reserve team. Mainz then permanently bought him in January of the following year.

Karius made his first-team debut for Mainz in December 2012 and became their undisputed first-choice goalkeeper in late 2013. He was also voted the second-best goalkeeper of the year in 2016.

In May 2016, Karius joined Liverpool for £4.75 million.

After the departure of Belgium international goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Karius officially became the first-team regular. However, due to his frequent blunders, including suffering a concussion in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League final and making two more errors that ultimately cost Liverpool the title, Karius faced a barrage of criticism and was subsequently frozen out of the team.

With the arrival of Alisson and Adrian in the summers of 2018 and 2019 respectively, and the rise of Caoimhin Kelleher in 2020, Karius completely lost his place at the Premier League giants.

During 2020 and 2021, he was successively loaned-out to Besiktas and Union Berlin respectively, but his performances did not improve significantly.

After his loan spell ended, Karius returned to Liverpool, serving only as the fourth-choice backup goalkeeper and not making a single appearance all season.

After his contract expired in September 2022, Karius joined Newcastle United as a free agent.

However, during his two-year spell with the Magpies, although he helped the team reach the Carabao Cup final once, he only made two appearances, conceding six goals.

In January 2025, Karius joined Schalke 04 as a free agent.

Since joining Die Königsblauen, Karius who has regained his confidence and former form has made 35 appearances for the newly promoted Bundesliga side, conceding 33 goals and keeping 14 clean sheets, winning one 2. Bundesliga title with the team.
