Friendly Match – Messi returns from injury and scores as a substitute, Argentina defeats Iceland 3-0.

On June 9th local time, Argentina played a friendly match against Iceland in Auburn, Alabama, USA. They ultimately won 3-0, welcoming the World Cup with a resounding victory.

From the start of the first half, Argentina and Iceland engaged in an attacking battle. In the 4th minute, Alberto Gudmundsson cut inside from the left and delivered a diagonal pass, but Mikael Elertsson's close-range shot went over the crossbar. In the 5th minute, Lisandro Martinez's long pass found Barentin Barco in the penalty area, whose shot was saved by Elias Olafsson. In the 8th minute, an Argentine free kick caused chaos in the Icelandic defense, and Barco volleyed home from outside the box to give Iceland the lead.

Taking a one-goal lead, Argentina gradually took control of the game. In the 12th minute, Nico Paz delivered a through ball from the edge of the penalty area, and Giuliano Simeone's low shot was saved by Olafsson. In the 23rd minute, Paz took a free kick in the attacking third, unleashing a powerful long-range shot that went directly over the crossbar. In the 40th minute, Barco delivered a low cross from the left wing, and Simeone's shot inside the penalty area was easily caught by Olafsson. In the 41st minute, Barco delivered another cross, and Paz's shot from a tight angle on the left side of the penalty area was again saved. In the 44th minute, Isak Johannesson attempted to open the scoring for Iceland with a long-range shot, but it was saved by Geronimo Rulli.

The second half began with both sides switching ends. In the 57th minute, Paz broke through on the right and delivered a cross, but Lautaro Martinez missed an open goal. In the 60th minute, Ori Oscarsson played a through ball down the right, and Haakon Haraldsson cut inside and fired a shot that went just wide. In the 62nd minute, Lautaro delivered a cross from the right side of the penalty area, and Alexis McAllister, unmarked, volleyed the ball into the right post. In the 66th minute, McAllister played a long pass from midfield to Lautaro, who broke into the penalty area and curled a shot that hit the post again.

In the 72nd minute, substitute Messi delivered a brilliant through ball with his first touch, but Olafson's sliding tackle to deny Lautaro Martinez a one-on-one opportunity was ruled a foul. Messi then converted the penalty, extending Argentina's lead. In the 86th minute, Messi again played a through ball, and Rodrigo De Paul cut the ball back inside the box, setting up Thiago Almada to tap it in and make it 3-0.

Neither side managed to score again. At the final whistle, Argentina, with attacks from multiple players, secured a 3-0 victory over Iceland.
