In an interview, German midfielder Leon Goretzka said he hopes the German national team can win back the support of fans, as this will be the team's biggest motivation to compete in the 2026 World Cup.
In an earlier friendly match, Germany defeated the United States 2-1 after goals from Havertz and Sané, securing two victories to prepare for the World Cup.
"We hope to make up for past regrets this summer, and the experiences of the past two World Cups will not bother us," said 31-year-old Goretzka.
"The fans have indeed lost some confidence in us, and we really want to win them back. This is my biggest motivation as a person and the whole team."
Furthermore, Germany will face Curaçao in their first Group E match of the 2026 World Cup, while Ivory Coast and Ecuador are also in Group E.
It's worth mentioning that other teams considered favorites to win this World Cup include defending champions Argentina, France, Portugal, England, and Spain, who will win the European Championship in 2024.
Goretzka pointed out, "Frankly, we are not among the favorites to win the title. However, as a football powerhouse like Germany, people still have high expectations for us."
“We have some top players, and as long as everyone stays healthy, we can achieve great results in the World Cup. If we can continue to grow and improve team cohesion during the tournament, then our potential is limitless.”
