Australian coach Gregg Popovich admits there were insufficient adjustments to the starting lineup.

In the group stage of the USA-Canadian Cup, Australia lost 0-2 to the United States. After the match, Australian head coach Tony Popovic reflected on his lineup and admitted that the team's performance in the first half was dull and that he should have made more adjustments to the starting lineup.

The US team launched a high-intensity pressing attack from the start of the match. In the 11th minute, Australian player Cameron Bouges inadvertently scored an own goal; Alex Freeman then added another goal, helping the US team take a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Throughout the first half, the US team dominated possession with 70%, repeatedly stretching the Australian defense and making it difficult for them to even break out of their own half. In the second half, Popovich brought on key players such as Nestor Ilankunda and Connor Metcalf, and the team's performance improved significantly, creating scoring opportunities, but unfortunately, they were unable to change the score.

The decision to bench the two players who scored in the previous victory against Turkey has sparked controversy. Popovic explained after the match that not starting them was to conserve their energy on the wings so that more explosive players could attack the opponent in the second half.

Popovich admitted, "We didn't want to use the same starting lineup. You can see why from today's game; I probably should have made more rotations."

“We looked really dull and lacked energy in the first half. We were slow to react to every ball, unable to regain any momentum, and conceded two very unfortunate goals.”

However, Popovich praised the team's second-half rebound: "Overall, I'm very happy with the team's response because we have a team that is very inexperienced in this level of competition, and I'm very satisfied with the performance in the second half."

After this defeat, Australia will face Paraguay in a crucial match that will directly determine whether they can advance to the round of 32.
