World Cup – Manzambi contributes a goal and an assist as Switzerland defeats Canada 2-1 to advance as world champions.

The third round of Group B matches in the 2026 World Cup has concluded, with Switzerland defeating host nation Canada 2-1 at the BMO Arena. They currently top Group B with a record of 7 points (2 wins, 1 loss), advancing to the knockout stage alongside Canada, who have 4 points.

Switzerland attempted to take the initiative early on, but to no avail: In the 11th minute, Ricardo Rodriguez's long diagonal pass from midfield created a one-on-one opportunity for Breel Embolo, whose shot was brilliantly saved by Maxim Crepo. John Manzambi followed up with a shot, but it was bravely blocked by Derek Cornelius.

Both teams then exchanged attacks. In the 20th minute, Mathieu Schwaner delivered a free kick from the right wing, and Luc Deforge Rolle's shot inside the box was saved by Gregor Kerber. In the 32nd minute, Jonathan David cut inside from the right and sent a long pass, Clay Larin broke into the box and attempted a chip shot, but it was again saved by Kerber. In the 38th minute, Switzerland won a free kick just outside the box, but Granit Xhaka's direct shot went over the crossbar. In the 41st minute, David crossed from the right wing into the box, and Ali Ahmed's shot was saved by Kerber. In the 44th minute, Tejon Buchanan passed the ball to the left wing, and David's powerful shot from the edge of the box went wide of the left.

The second half began with a dramatic shift in the game's momentum. Less than a minute into the second half, Manzambi delivered a cross from the right side of the penalty area, and the unmarked Ruben Vargas calmly slotted home to break the deadlock for Switzerland. In the 57th minute, Embolo, facing three defenders, passed the ball to the right side of the penalty area, where Manzambi followed up with a shot to extend the lead to 2-0. In the 76th minute, Nathan Saliba delivered a brilliant pass from the right side of the penalty area, and substitute Promis David tapped in to pull one back for Canada. Neither side managed to score again, and the final score remained 2-1.
