Tottenham Hotspur spend £85 million to sign midfield starlet Fernandes

Tottenham Hotspur have officially reached an agreement with West Ham United to sign 21-year-old Portuguese midfield star Mateus Fernandes for a transfer fee of £85 million.

It's worth noting that this £85 million offer is a fixed amount, without any subsequent clauses. Tottenham's strong bid directly beat Premier League rivals Manchester United in the competition, who had previously withdrawn from the race after refusing to match the price.

Prior to this major signing, Tottenham had made other attempts to strengthen their midfield. They initially offered £80 million for Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, but after being explicitly rejected, the Tottenham management quickly shifted their focus, making Fernandes their top priority for midfield reinforcement.

Despite Fernandez's two consecutive seasons of relegation from the Premier League, his talent has not been overshadowed, and his agent, Jorge Mendes, has been helping him connect with various top clubs.

With the arrival of Fernandes, Tottenham's summer signings have reached five, greatly bolstering their squad. Prior to this, the club had already spent £52 million to sign Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hek from Brighton, and signed Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson, and veteran goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on free transfers.
