Utah Jazz rookie Darrin Peterson said in an interview that he hopes to become a player with both offensive and defensive abilities, and that he aims to be like the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant.
Darrin Peterson, 19, was selected second overall in the 2026 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz. Peterson, who has been signed by the Jazz, previously stated that his goal is to win an NBA championship and to achieve his dream as quickly as possible.
Darrin Peterson, who plays shooting guard, came from the University of Kansas Eagles and played 24 games in the 2025/26 season, averaging 20.2 points per game with a field goal percentage of 43.8% and a three-point percentage of 38.2%.
Darrin Peterson said, "I hope to become a defender who can shut down opponents, but obviously I haven't really guarded the best players in the world yet, but I'm willing to take on that challenge."
“I’m a huge Kobe Bryant fan. He was top-notch on both ends of the court, and he’s my idol. So I’ll give it my all on the defensive end.”
Kobe Bryant once said in an interview, "For me, defense is a challenge. Some people think, if I score 30 points and you score 30 points, it's okay. But what I want is for me to score 30 points and for the opponent to not score a single point. That's my philosophy."
In addition, NBA legend Kendrick Perkins said, "In my opinion, Darlin Peterson is the most promising player in this draft class, without a doubt."
"His minimum standard is Bradley Beal, and if he can fully realize his potential, his ceiling is Kobe Bryant, so this young player's talent is just that amazing."
