Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced the signing of 21-year-old Portuguese international midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.
It is reported that the transfer fee for this deal is as high as £85 million, setting a new record for the highest transfer fee in Tottenham Hotspur's history. Tottenham has not yet disclosed the specific length of the contract.
Fernandez is considered one of the most promising young midfielders in Europe. He gained valuable Premier League experience over the past two seasons, playing for Southampton and West Ham United, and was named Southampton's Player of the Season in the 2024-25 season.
Although Fernandez has made one appearance for the Portuguese national team, he unfortunately failed to make the squad for this World Cup. Speaking about his move to the club, Fernandez expressed high hopes for new coach Roberto De Zerbi.
In an interview, Fernandes said: "I am very happy and very excited about this next step. It's a huge club. I've spoken with the manager, and I think he's the key person who made me join Tottenham. We will fight for first place in the Premier League because I want to win trophies."
Despite the high expectations brought by his transfer fee, Fernandez displayed a mature mindset: "Now that I've come to this club, I will face different pressures and mindsets."
“But I believe in myself, and I know I can improve the team and the club. I came here to help the team, to help the head coach, and to be ready for this kind of pressure.”
