Shams: Mitchell signs 4-year, $273 million max contract extension with Cavaliers

According to a report by ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday, the Cleveland Cavaliers have reached a contract extension agreement with seven-time All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell will receive a four-year, $273 million maximum contract, which includes a player option for the 2030/31 season and a 15% trade bonus.

Since Mitchell already has a guaranteed $50.1 million contract for the 2026/27 season, this contract extension will not change the Cavaliers' current salary structure. Their total salary next season will still reach $250.3 million, $85.4 million higher than the league salary cap.

As the 13th overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, Mitchell began his professional career with the Utah Jazz. He played five seasons for the Jazz, appearing in 345 regular season games, averaging 23.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in 33.7 minutes per game.

Since joining the Cavaliers in September 2022, Mitchell has played 264 regular season games, averaging 26.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.5 steals in 33.9 minutes per game, and was selected to the All-NBA Team for the first time in 2025. In the playoffs, the 29-year-old played 42 games for the Cavaliers, averaging 27.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.5 steals in 36.4 minutes per game.

ESPN salary expert Bobby Marks understands that Mitchell had the opportunity to sign a five-year, $353 million maximum contract extension in the summer of 2027. His decision to sign a long-term deal now is to demonstrate his absolute loyalty to the Cavaliers.

Other sources indicate that Mitchell is open to a LeBron James return. The Cavaliers are currently one of the favorites to sign James, with other contenders including the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
