Real Sociedad has extended manager Matarazzo's contract for one year, until June 2028.

Real Sociedad announced on Tuesday that manager Pellegrino Matarazzo has renewed his contract. The new contract extends the original expiry date of 2027 by one year, until June 30, 2028.

The 48-year-old Matarazzo was born in Wayne, New Jersey, USA, and officially began his coaching career in 2010 with the Nuremberg youth team. He subsequently served as the head coach of Stuttgart and Hoffenheim, with his most notable achievement being leading Hoffenheim to qualify for the 2024/25 Europa League.

In December 2025, Matarazzo succeeded Sergio Francisco as manager of Real Sociedad. During his tenure, he achieved a record of 12 wins, 8 draws, and 6 losses, and led the team to victory over Real Madrid to win the 2025/26 Copa del Rey.

Following the contract extension, Real Sociedad president Hawking Appellibai stated, "Rino has been fully committed from the beginning, and we are hopeful for building a future together. Maintaining peak performance from Monday to Friday is key to Real Sociedad becoming a top club. We must continue along this path."

Real Sociedad's Director of Football, Eric Bretos, added: "We are delighted to have extended Rino's contract. He has found the key to success, and we look forward to continuing to work with him, progressing together, and driving the team forward. We still have many ambitious and exciting goals to achieve in the future."

Matarazo also expressed his joy at the contract renewal: "I am very happy that the work we have done together has been recognized and valued. Most importantly, I am full of expectations for the future. I believe we have great potential and there are still many goals we can achieve together in the future."
