Former Al-Nassr manager Jorge Jesus has officially taken over as head coach of the Portuguese national team, signing a contract until 2030.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced on Friday the official appointment of 71-year-old Jorge Jesus as the national team coach. He will take over from Roberto Martinez and lead the team until the end of the 2030 World Cup.

Other reports indicate that Jesus' pre-tax annual salary as coach of the Portuguese national team is 4 million euros.

Before taking over the Five Shields, Jesus had stepped down as head coach of Al-Nassr due to the expiration of his term. Since taking charge of Al-Nassr in July 2023, he has achieved a record of 40 wins, 2 draws and 7 losses in all competitions with Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo, and won the Saudi League title last season.

Besides Al-Nassr, Jesus also coached several other teams, including Amora, Braga, Benfica, Sporting CP, Flamengo, Fenerbahce, and Al-Hilal. His club achievements are remarkable, having led his teams to three Portuguese Primeira Liga titles, one Portuguese Cup, six Portuguese League Cups, two Portuguese Super Cups, one Brazilian Serie A title, one Brazilian Super Cup, one Copa Libertadores title, one Copa Sudamericana title, one Turkish Cup, one Saudi Arabian Premier League title, one Saudi King's Cup, and three Saudi Super Cups.

Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proenza warmly welcomed Gabriel Jesus' arrival: "Today, we usher in a new era for the Portuguese Football Federation. Jorge Jesus' appointment marks the beginning of a winning culture with clear objectives for the Portuguese national team. This culture will be implemented with unwavering conviction and will become our new standard going forward."

"The national team coach we have chosen perfectly embodies our expectations for this new phase: leadership, ambition, and the ability to deliver results. Jorge Jesus will shoulder this responsibility from today onwards, aiming to build a national team capable of competing in the next UEFA Nations League, the 2028 European Championship, and the 2030 World Cup. He is a demanding and widely recognized coach, and one of the most outstanding coaches in Portuguese football history. He is always focused on victory, has a clear coaching philosophy, and shares our philosophy."

Jesus himself also expressed his anticipation for coaching the Portuguese national team: "I want to thank the president for giving me the opportunity to coach one of the best national teams in the world. We have a national team that we can trust. We should cherish our players and their brilliant performances, as well as the national team that truly belongs to us. I firmly identify with everything about being Portuguese and am incredibly proud to be one."

"Now, I am the head coach of 11 million Portuguese people. My coaching team and I are here with only one goal: to win the championship. As a coach, my responsibilities go far beyond what is done on the field."
