Spain coach De la Fuente uses humor to face Argentina

With the 2026 World Cup final just around the corner, Spain's head coach Luis de la Fuente displayed unexpected ease and confidence at his Friday press conference.

Looking ahead to the epic showdown with defending champions Argentina, De la Fuente even joked that the only thing that made his heart race wasn't the match, but the helicopter ride back to the hotel.

“I’m quite nervous because we have to take a helicopter back later,” De la Fuente told reporters with a smile. “We came by helicopter and we have to fly back after the press conference, which really makes me nervous.”

"But that's all. I'm completely calm, and I feel really lucky to be standing here fighting for the championship."

As the newly crowned European champions, Spain will be chasing their first World Cup title since 2010. Facing a Messi-led Argentina team aiming for a back-to-back title, De la Fuente insists his team will enjoy the moment and not be overwhelmed by the pressure.

When asked about the traditional notion that no one remembers the runner-up, De la Fuente countered, "For me, being in the position to compete for the championship is an honor in itself. If we can reach the World Cup final every year, I'd be happy even if we lose. We will use our strengths and qualities to enjoy that moment."

Speaking about the upcoming tactical battle against his former protégé Scaloni, De la Fuente predicted it would be a pure football feast: "This is a clash between two world-class teams, and we have many similarities in our playing style and player talent. I believe that in this match, talent on the field and beautiful football will outweigh any other factors."
