Monza announced on their official website on Wednesday that they have signed Benfica's Portugal U21s international striker Gustavo Varela.
According to the newly promoted Serie A club's official statement, Varela has signed on a long-term four-year deal with the club which runs until the summer of 2030.
About Gustavo Varela
Gustavo Varela, who is only still 21 years old, was born on January 30, 2005, in Lisbon, Portugal. He is 1.84 meters tall, plays as a center forward and holds dual Portuguese and Cape Verdean citizenship. His father, Fernando, is a retired former Cape Verde international defender.
Varela joined Sporting Clube de Portugal's youth academy at the age of eight and joined PAOK Thessaloniki's youth academy in 2016.
In January 2022, Varela joined Benfica's youth academy, started playing for their B team the following year before completing his Benfica first-team debut by coming on as a substitute in May 2024.
In the summer of 2025, Varela was loaned-out to Gil Vicente.
Last season, Varela made 33 appearances for the Portuguese Primeira Liga super dark horse in all competitions, scoring 7 goals and providing 3 assists.
