Liverpool midfielder Wirtz recently flew to the United States with Hrafinberg and Isak for pre-season training. Wirtz said he thoroughly enjoyed training with his teammates and is looking forward to the new season.
In the 2025/26 Premier League season, Wirtz scored 5 goals and provided 3 assists after a period of adjustment. In the Champions League, he contributed one goal and 3 assists for Liverpool. Furthermore, Wirtz will represent Germany at the 2026 World Cup.
Wirtz, 23, said, "I feel great and I'm happy to see all my teammates again. I've also met the new head coach Andoni Iraola and his coaching staff. Overall, it feels really good."
“I think this short break was very important, allowing my body to recover a bit. It would have been even better if I could have rested for a few more weeks, but that’s how it is for professional players. But I’m very happy to be back playing because football is what I love most. So, I’m really happy to be back with the team.”
Wirtz shared, "Training has been really fun, and I've enjoyed every single session so far. There are lots of mini-games and ball control drills in training, which are exactly what I like most. So far, I've been really enjoying everything."
“I’ve always been more of an attacking midfielder. However, I play whichever position the coach assigns me, and we’ve discussed that. As for how this season will ultimately turn out, let’s wait and see.”
In addition, Wirtz said, "I'm not satisfied with last season. I mean the overall results, not that I was unhappy every day I came to the training ground. We were hoping to achieve better results last season, but I think everything needs to start afresh this season. Starting with this training camp is a new beginning."
“We still have a lot of areas to improve, and I’m really looking forward to my second season at Liverpool.”
It's worth mentioning that Jürgen Klopp, who coached Liverpool for many years, recently became the new head coach of the German national team.
Wirtz said, "It's fantastic that he's coming to coach the team. I haven't spoken to him yet, but many people in the club have talked to me about him, and they all say he's a very great person. Everyone at Liverpool loves him, so I'm really looking forward to meeting him in a few months."
