Portsmouth have officially announced the signing of 20-year-old centre-back Benjamin Arthur on loan from Premier League club Brentford for one season. The young defender will wear the number 2 jersey for Portsmouth in the new season, embarking on a new chapter in his professional career.
Benjamin Arthur, a former England U20 international, gained valuable experience on loan at Scottish giants Celtic in the second half of last season. Portsmouth manager John Mousinho expressed his delight at the arrival of the young centre-back: "We are delighted to welcome Benjamin Arthur to the new season. He is a very promising defender, and we believe his arrival will further strengthen our defense."
“He possesses all the qualities a center-back should have, and is also very capable in ball control and playmaking. Despite his young age, he already has experience in top-flight leagues, which is invaluable to him. We believe he can integrate well into the team and play an important role in our third season in the Championship.”
Benjamin Arthur came through the Peterborough United youth academy before joining Brentford B in 2023, where he gradually developed and transformed. Through continued hard work, he was named Brentford U21 Player of the Year at the end of the 2024/25 season, while also helping the team win the Professional Development League title.
Benjamin Arthur's outstanding performances in the youth team earned him a place in Brentford's first team, where he made his professional first-team debut in the League Cup match against Aston Villa. Last season, he made three appearances for Brentford's first team, further accumulating valuable professional experience.
In the second half of last season, Benjamin Arthur joined Scottish giants Celtic on loan, making six appearances and helping the team win both the league and cup titles. Now, he will begin a new chapter in his Championship career, facing new challenges in a more competitive league. Portsmouth also expects the young centre-back to further enhance the team's overall defensive stability with his excellent physical attributes, solid footwork, and previous top-flight experience.
