34-year-old defender Dan Burn has been officially appointed as the new captain of Newcastle United.

Newcastle United Football Club has officially announced that 34-year-old England defender Dan Burn has been appointed as the club's new permanent captain, leading the team in the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Burn has been a die-hard Newcastle United fan since childhood and has long held season tickets for St. James' Park. In the four and a half years since joining the team, he has become the fourth most capped veteran in the squad and has made 11 appearances for the England national team (including 3 appearances at this summer's World Cup).

As a core member of the team committee, Burn wore the armband five times last season. After accepting the appointment, Burn emotionally stated: "Being appointed as captain of Newcastle United is the highest honor. Representing the club I supported as a child is already a great privilege, but becoming the permanent captain is even more significant."

“We have experienced many incredible moments together over the past four and a half years, but I believe there are even more glorious moments to be created in the future. I am very happy to take on this responsibility and do my best to urge everyone to move forward every day.”

Head coach Matthias Jaissle praised the new captain: "Dan is a natural leader who puts the team's interests first, both on and off the field. No one understands better than him the extraordinary significance of the Magpies to this city. During this period of change and integration for the team, his experience will be key to guiding the young players."

It is understood that Burn will officially take the lead as captain in Sunday's preseason friendly against Strasbourg in Ligue 1.
