Leicester City have completed their midfield signing, with Irish international Will Smallburn officially joining the team. The agreement was reached on a free transfer, but the final completion of the transfer is still subject to approval by the English Football League (EFL).
Will Smallburn, 26, possesses distinctive technical skills and has accumulated experience in the Championship and international competitions. After completing his signing, he will soon meet his new teammates and prepare with the team for the upcoming away match against Stevenage.
Will Smallburn began his football career at Southampton's youth academy and played a crucial role in the team's push for the Premier League in the 2023/24 season. He first scored in the promotion play-off semi-final against West Bromwich Albion, and then provided an assist in the winning goal for Leeds United in the final at Wembley.
Speaking about his feelings after joining Leicester City, Will Smallburn said: "I can't wait to start this new journey. I'm excited about the future and eager to get back into the team as soon as possible. I've been mentored by the manager for a long time and I know some of the players well, and I've even faced them in matches. These past experiences should help me integrate into the new environment more smoothly."
Will Smallburn was born in Basingstoke and officially signed his first professional contract with Southampton in February 2017. In 2020, he made his first-team debut, starting in the FA Cup against Huddersfield Town and helping Southampton to a 2-0 victory, while also scoring the opening goal of the match.
During his time at Southampton, Will Smallburn made 77 official appearances and scored 7 goals. He also had loan spells at Stoke City and Millwall, which broadened his Championship experience.
