Former Danish international and Bundesliga legend Yannick Vestergaard officially announced his retirement on Friday, ending his 15-year professional career.
Since terminating his contract with Leicester City this summer, Westergaard has been unemployed. Finally, in an interview with Danish media outlet Politiken, he confirmed his decision to retire: "A sense of burnout has arisen. I feel that my motivation is not just waning, but almost completely gone."
“I have school-aged children. Unless there are very special reasons, it is difficult for me to make the decision to let my children leave their familiar living environment just to pursue a short-term contract of one year. After all, at my age, I can usually only get a one-year contract.”
The 34-year-old Vestergaard is a center-back who is nearly two meters tall. He made his Bundesliga debut for Hoffenheim on April 16, 2011. He then played for Werder Bremen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Southampton, making a total of 298 appearances, scoring 21 goals and providing 3 assists.
In August 2021, Vestergaard transferred to Leicester City for €17.6 million. He played for Leicester City for five seasons, making 118 appearances in all competitions and contributing 5 goals.
Vestergaard also made 59 appearances for the Danish national team, including one World Cup (2018) and two European Championships (2021, 2024). During this time, he contributed 3 goals and 1 assist for Denmark.
