The Magic have confirmed their new head coach; Spurs assistant coach Sweeney will take over.

May 30 - According to ESPN , the Orlando Magic have essentially finalized the hiring of San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney as the team's new head coach, replacing Jamal Mosley, who was previously fired.

Sweeney is serving as the Spurs' lead assistant coach this season and will officially take over after completing his current playoff duties. He will still be with the team in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the outcome of which will determine whether the Spurs advance to the NBA Finals.

According to sources, former Bulls head coach Billy Donovan and Clippers assistant coach Jeff Van Gundy were also on the final shortlist, but Sweeney impressed management more with his performance in the interview.

This season, Sweeney was responsible for building the Spurs' defensive system, raising the team's defensive efficiency from 25th to 3rd in the league and helping them achieve a 62-20 record, one of the best performances in franchise history in recent years. He previously served as a core assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks and was part of the coaching staff that led the team to the 2024 NBA Finals.
