June 10th - Following Game 3 of the NBA Finals, several players from the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks commented on a video circulating on social media showing a fan clash. The video shows what appears to be New York fans attacking Spurs fans in the street and tearing their jerseys.
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wimbledon responded to the incident, stating, "We can't forget that this is just a game. I understand passion, but it must be based on mutual respect, and this kind of behavior is unacceptable."
Video footage shows physical altercations between fans during and after the game. According to ABC News, the New York Police Department stated that at least 21 people have been arrested in connection with fan-related incidents.
Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns also urged fans to remain rational. Towns emphasized that the competition should stay on the court and not escalate into off-court conflicts.
In addition, Spurs forward Julian Champagne stated that players did not generally feel a security threat while in New York. However, he pointed out that any form of violence should not occur.
Spurs rookie Dylan Harper admitted that this was the first time he had felt such a strong sense of hostility in New York. However, he believes that the focus of basketball should always be the game itself, not off-court rivalries and conflicts.
