Dusty May, who previously led the University of Michigan to the NCAA championship, is set to become the Dallas Mavericks' head coach.

According to reports from Shams Charania and other journalists on Monday, 49-year-old University of Michigan head coach Dusty May is set to replace Jason Kidd as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. The length of his contract and other details are currently unknown.

Taking the helm of the Mavericks marks a new phase in May's coaching career. He has been deeply involved in college basketball since 2005 and is considered one of the most sought-after coaches in the NCAA today.

May previously served as an assistant coach at several universities, including Eastern Michigan, Murray State, Alabama Birmingham, Louisiana Tech, and Florida State, before officially beginning his independent coaching career in 2018. His most notable achievements include leading Florida Atlantic University to a historic Final Four appearance in 2023 and guiding the University of Michigan to the NCAA national championship this season.

For the Mavericks, hiring May, who lacks NBA coaching experience, as head coach is a bold move. For the past month, under the leadership of Masai Ujiri, they have been working intensively on their head coaching search, considering candidates including San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney, Duke University head coach Jon Sheyer, and Minnesota Timberwolves lead assistant coach Mika Nori.

Other sources revealed that a key factor in May's decision to join Dallas was closely related to Cooper Flagg, the 2025/26 NBA Rookie of the Year. The opportunity to coach Flagg was an irresistible attraction for him.
