Sources: NCAA champion head coach Dusty May will become the Dallas Mavericks' head coach.

According to ESPN, Dusty May, the head coach who just led the University of Michigan men's basketball team to the 2026 NCAA national championship, is currently finalizing a head coaching contract with the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA.

After the Mavericks fired Jason Kidd following a 26-56 record last season, May will build the team around last season's NBA Rookie of the Year, Cooper Flagg.

The 49-year-old May has an outstanding coaching record in college basketball. During his two seasons in Ann Arbor, he led the University of Michigan to a 64-13 record.

Previously, while coaching at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), May led the team to the NCAA Tournament for two consecutive years and made history by reaching the Final Four in 2023. Over his four college coaching seasons, he has a record of 124 wins and 26 losses.

May enjoys a high reputation for his on-court tactics and roster building. Facing the small-ball trend in college basketball, he successfully found a solution by utilizing multiple big men to create a super-sized roster.

During the University of Michigan's championship parade in April, the university announced a long-term contract extension agreement with May, but the two sides did not officially sign it at the time. May was formerly the basketball director at Indiana University, and subsequently rose through the ranks by serving as a video analyst and assistant coach at several universities.

May is the first college head coach to move to the NBA since former University of Michigan head coach John Beilein took over the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019. However, the most recent college coach to go to the NBA after winning a championship was Billy Donovan, who went to coach the NBA after winning the NCCA championship in 2015.
