Wolfsburg have officially signed Hauk Waal to a contract that runs until June 2029.

VfL Wolfsburg have announced the signing of German centre-back Hauk Waal from St. Pauli. The 32-year-old has signed a contract with the club until June 30, 2029.  

Wolfsburg sporting director Piermin Schwegler said: "Hauk Waal perfectly fits our criteria for player acquisition. He is an experienced defender who has maintained a consistent and high level of performance in recent years. He can bring composure and stability to the team with his experience, while also possessing excellent leadership skills. In addition, his personal qualities on and off the field are equally commendable."  

The player said after joining Wolfsburg: "After positive communication with Dieter Hecking, Piermin Schwegler and Tobias Strobl, I quickly made the decision to accept the challenge. Despite the team's relegation, I still think Wolfsburg is a great club. I am happy to complete the transfer and look forward to joining training this week and integrating into the new environment as soon as possible."  

Hauk Waal was born in Hamburg and completed his football training in Schleswig-Holstein. He played for Wittshofer and Tritau before entering the Schwerin Sports Academy at the age of 13 for professional development. Later, he transferred from Eintracht Schwerin to Dynamo Dresden and joined the Kiel system in his youth.  

He began his professional career at Holstein Kiel, where the 1.89-meter tall centre-back then moved to Paderborn in 2015, joined Ingolstadt in 2016, and had a brief loan spell at Heidenheim. Hauk Waal returned to Holstein Kiel in 2018 and played for the team for the next five seasons, serving as captain for much of that time. In 2023, he transferred to St. Pauli.  

During his time at St. Pauli, Hauk Waal made 105 official appearances and scored 4 goals. To date, he has accumulated 376 appearances in the Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga, and 3. Liga, possessing a wealth of experience. Now, he will join Wolfsburg to begin a new phase of his career.
