World Cup – Oyarzabal scores twice as Spain defeats Austria 3-0

The 2026 World Cup continued with the competition among the 32 teams. Spain, playing at the SoFi Stadium, defeated Austria 3-0 after goals from Oyarzabal and Pedro Polo.

At the start of the match, Spain launched the first attack. Barcelona star Yamar received a pass from Baena and took a long-range shot from outside the penalty area, but the ball was caught by Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. In the 7th minute, Pedro Polo chipped a pass to Olmo, whose shot was cleared by an opposing player.

In the 18th minute, Austria launched a counter-attack with a cross, but Gregoritsch was unable to create any threat. In the 29th minute, Spain took a corner kick, and Cucurella slotted the ball into the net amidst the scramble, but the referee ruled that a Spanish player had interfered with Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager, therefore the goal was disallowed.

Shortly after, Oyarzabal received a pass from Olmo and fired a low shot from inside the penalty area, but Alexander Schlager immediately dived to save it.

In the 36th minute, Pedri orchestrated an attack, Cucurella crossed the ball, and Oyarzabal slotted it home, giving Spain a 1-0 lead. In the 38th minute, Pedro Polo played a diagonal pass, Yamal followed up and dribbled past the defense before unleashing a long-range shot, but the ball was intercepted by Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

In the first half stoppage time, Spain had a free kick opportunity. Baena took the free kick and shot directly, but the ball hit the post. Yamal's follow-up shot was blocked by Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

In the 49th minute of the second half, Rodri created an attacking opportunity. In the 78th minute, Yamal took a corner kick, and Ferran Torres' header went over the bar. In the 82nd minute, Sabitzer crossed the ball, and Stefan Posch's header went wide. In the 85th minute, Yamal received a pass from Pedro Polo and shot, but his shot was blocked by an opposing player.

In the 89th minute, Cucurella crossed the ball, and Obasabal seized the opportunity with no one marking him and slotted it home, helping Spain extend their lead to 3-0.

In the end, Spain defeated Austria 3-0 and advanced to the round of 16.
