Ewing returns to the NBA as an assistant coach for the Wizards, assisting Keeve.

July 5th - According to ESPN , NBA legend and New York Knicks icon Patrick Ewing has agreed to join the Washington Wizards coaching staff. Ewing will serve as an assistant coach to head coach Brian Keeve .

Previously, Ewing served as a Knicks team ambassador. The Wizards' management values his legendary status and extensive coaching experience, hoping he can help the team better develop young players, establish good communication with core players such as Anthony Davis and Trae Young , and assist the young roster led by 2026 number one draft pick AJ Disenza in their growth.

Ewing previously served as an NBA assistant coach for the Wizards, Magic, Hornets, and Rockets. From 2017 to 2023 , he coached his alma mater, Georgetown University, leading the team to the Big East Championship in 2021. However, due to the team's record of only 13 wins and 50 losses in its last two seasons , he left in 2023 .

As the number one overall pick in the 1985 NBA draft, Ewing played 15 seasons for the Knicks, holding franchise records for points, rebounds, blocks, steals, and games played, and leading the team to the playoffs for 13 consecutive seasons. The Knicks retired his number 33 jersey in 2003 , and Ewing was inducted into both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the NCAA Basketball Hall of Fame.
