Sunderland striker Mayenda has officially joined Rennes on a five-year contract.

Rennes officially announced on Sunday that Spanish striker Eliecel Mayenda has joined the club from Sunderland. The two sides have signed a five-year contract, valid until June 30, 2031.

According to multiple media reports, Mayanda's transfer fee was €21 million plus €4 million in add-ons. His contract with Sunderland was originally set to expire in June 2028.

Mayenda, 21, was born in Zaragoza, Spain. After moving to France in 2013, he joined the youth academies of Bouleille, Brettini, and Sochaux. On December 18, 2021, he made his professional debut for Sochaux in the fifth round of the French Cup against Nantes.

In July 2023, Mayenda joined Sunderland from Sochaux for €800,000. After a first-year loan spell at Hibernian, he gradually made a name for himself at Sunderland.

To date, Mayenda has made 72 appearances for Sunderland, contributing 12 goals and 6 assists. He not only played a crucial role in Sunderland's promotion to the Premier League but was also considered a key player in the team's successful survival last season.

Regarding Mayenda's signing, Rennes Executive Chairman and Managing Director Arnaud Pouille commented: "The competition surrounding Elliecel was fierce, but he showed a strong determination to join us. We are very proud to witness him sign with Rennes today."

“We warmly welcome him and his family to AC Milan. I wish him a smooth transition into the new locker room and hope he can make the most of his strengths.”

Rennes sporting director Loïc Desiree added: “We have been looking for a speedy player who can improve our attacking depth. Eliessel can play as a winger or in the center. Despite his young age, he has already played in leagues in several countries. We know his potential and believe he can quickly integrate into the team. I have full confidence in him.”

“His mentality is exemplary. We have received a lot of positive feedback about his attitude, which is just as important as his performance on the field.”

Mayenda said after signing the contract: "I am very happy to join Rennes. Rennes is a top club that everyone talked about when I was in Sochaux. I would describe myself as an all-around striker who likes to make forward runs, dribble past defenders and challenge them. I can't wait to make my debut at Roazon Park, fight alongside my new teammates, and experience Ligue 1 – an underrated league."
