AFP exclusively reported on Thursday that the French Public Prosecutor's Office has officially launched a criminal investigation into Paraguayan female Senator Celeste Amarilla for her recent racist remarks against Kylian Mbappé.
According to the report, Mbappé, along with the French Football Federation (FFF), has had enough of Amarilla's relentless racist abuse and insults, and has decided to formally file a complaint with the French government against the senator's unethical behaviour.
French President Emmanuel Macron is also extremely unhappy with Amarilla's actions, believing they have escalated to a personal attack on all Black French citizens. To protect the dignity of Mbappé and all Black communities in France, the government has decided to accept the FFF's complaint.
Considering this incident could escalate diplomatic tensions between France and Paraguay, the government has authorized the French Public Prosecutor's Office to launch a criminal investigation into Amarilla's racist behaviour.
Depending on the prosecutor's final findings, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs may consider publicly condemning Amarilla and even reporting the matter to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
It's worth mentioning that the Paraguayan government also disapproves of Amarilla's actions. Some government officials and ministers have even issued official statements condemning her behaviour, reiterating that Amarilla's remarks "violate our country's values and principles of peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity," and that her personal actions do not represent the position of the government or all Paraguayan citizens.
Despite this, Amarilla refuses to admit wrongdoing. Although she has retracted and deleted some of her offensive remarks, she still insists that Kylian Mbappé must apologize to her for his response, even claiming that she is demanding an apology from the player in the name of "defending gender equality".
This egregious incident stems from the recent Round of 16s match between France and Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in United States, Canada and Mexico .
At the time, defending champions France narrowly defeated Paraguay 1-0 to advance, but Amarilla, unable to accept defeat, deliberately made a series of highly racist remarks online against Mbappé and other African descent players of Les Bleus.
In her highly controversial post, Amarilla wrote: "A Cameroonian product of colonization, desperately trying to pass himself off as French, resentful, nouveau riche, arrogant and ugly. He was nervous and terrified the whole game, and so was his team. They couldn't score a single goal; they won by luck."
Furthermore, she deliberately retweeted posts from online aggregators accounts which alleged that Mbappé intentionally ignored Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gil's attempt to shake his hand after the match, writing: "This rude guy hasn't even learned to write; he doesn't drink breast milk, he drinks coconut juice, and the most civilized voice he's ever heard comes from a chimpanzee. Orlando Gil, you should have given him the middle finger. I do it in the Senate, and nothing happened!"
Mbappé himself immediately responded to Amarilla's actions. He angrily rebuked her by saying: "Ms. Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman, unfit for your position."
"You do not represent Paraguay—a nation that has displayed passion and glory throughout the tournament. Because of your ignorance and blatant racism, the world has forgotten the historic journey and efforts of your players in this World Cup, and instead has been replaced by an incompetent woman who has left her country with the worst possible image."
